Count Fewer Sheep with Marpac
Nightmare Scenario
Have you ever lied in bed, and despite how cozy the blankets are, the thing greeting you isn’t Mr. Sandman, but the cold stare of the spackled ceiling? It’s a nightmare.
The average adult only gets about 6.8 hours of sleep each night, which is about 85% of the recommended requirement. To make matters worse, chronically getting a bad night’s rest comes with a slew of negative effects ranging from mental and physical fatigue, weight gain and even anxiety.
So long Sandman
It doesn’t have to be that way. in 1962, Jim Buckwalter grew tired of waiting for the Sandman and got to work. Like a sleepy MacGuyver, he pieced together a turntable motor, small fan blade, dog bowl and foam-covered wooden disc and created the world’s first white noise machine, the SleepMate.
In the span of 5 decades, the SleepMate, now known as the Dohm, has left millions of sound sleepers in its wake. Experticity was lucky enough to hop into bed with it. We asked two of our resident Sleeping Experts to test the Dohm for four nights.

“According to my fitness tracker I average around 6 hours of sleep a night with roughly 45 minutes of restlessness. I have nothing but trouble falling asleep and never wake up in the same position. If I go to bed at a 12 o’clock position, I wake up at a 3 o’clock, tangled in blankets if I haven’t already kicked them off. I can’t wait to try the Dohm because all the home remedies I’ve tried aren’t cutting the mustard.”

“I usually sleep with a fan for white noise. It’s helpful in the summer, but it’s not a wonderful solution on colder nights and the winter. During allergy season, the cool air makes my throat feel even drier. I’m excited to test the Dohm and see if it achieves the same results without the annoying cons of a fan.”
The science behind sound sleep
White noise masks background noise by filling up space with a steady flow of ambient sound. All the noisy hotel neighbors tromping around late at night, yappy dogs and rhythmic drips from the master bathroom faucet aren’t drowned out with a louder volume but washed out with a consistent sonic frequency.
Night one/Sunday morning
Jeff
Hours of sleep: 8
“I tried the Dohm for the first time last night and was able to get exactly 8 hours and 1 minute of sleep. Usually my upstairs neighbors or their dogs wake me up, but not today. I woke up naturally and feel pretty refreshed. When I looked at my fitness tracker to gauge my quality of sleep, I only had 30 minutes of relentlessness. If I woke up at all I certainly don’t remember it.”

Hours of sleep: 8
“This was probably the first time my body has allowed me to sleep in past 8 a.m. in months. I woke up several times during the night, as usual, but I found it easier to fall back asleep. All the noises that come with living in an old house were far less distracting than they would usually be if I was sleeping without my fan.”

Dohm-inate your sleep
Smartphones aren’t doing anyone any favors when it comes to inducing sleep.
Not only does looking at your screen make it harder to fall asleep, but trying to play white noise from an app isn’t nearly as effective as natural, room-filling sound.
People aren’t androids and don’t dream of electric sheep. The brain can tell the difference between a series of ones and zeros and real, natural sound.
The Dohm produces the same organic sound Mr. Buckwalter’s SleepMate did 54 years ago. The technology and materials have evolved and improved (no more dog bowls) without sacrificing sound quality. “It’s like comparing an MP3 to a vinyl record, there’s no contest to what sounds better,” said Michelle, Marpac’s Commercial Sales Manager.
Expert Tip
It’s not just for sleeping. Therapists and other professionals even use the Dohm to create a privacy curtain of sound.
Night two/Monday Morning
Jeff
“The fitness tracker says I only had 20 minutes of restlessness. Definitely an improvement from the night before.”

“This night of sleep was a little rough, I’ll try adjusting the volume on the Dohm the next time I use it to block out even more outside noise.”

Rohm
The Rohm helps cabins, offices, hotel rooms — and everything in between — sound like home so sleep and relaxation aren’t elusive while on the road.
Hushh
Hushh is Marpac’s bundle of joy and built for babies. It’s super portable with three sound options to lull little ones to sleep at home, in the stroller or on a drive.
Night three/Tuesday morning
Jeff
“I slept like a baby last night. I turned off the lights and that was that, I was out. Just like yesterday, my alarm went off and I was up.”

“Before bed I tinkered with my Dohm and adjusted its tone to a deeper sound that felt more relaxing.”

Night four/Wednesday morning
Jeff
Hours of sleep: 8
“I feel great. I feel like once I completed my new two-step nightly ritual of flicking on my Dohm and turning off my table lamp I fell right asleep, no tossing and turning. The icing on the cake? Only 17 minutes of recorded restless sleep. I woke up rested, went for a run and had enough time to get to work early.

Hours of sleep: 7
“I slept well and only woke up once or twice, which, again, is a big deal for me, and I even had enough energy to get my exercise in first thing in the morning! When I woke up in the middle of the night, the Dohm’s sound was soothing and helped me get back to sleep faster.”

Happy sleepers are healthy
Bed hair and pillow-lined faces aside, beauty sleep is a real thing. Getting enough quality shut eye boosts your immune system, and lowers risk of heart disease and diabetes. Stop losing count of sheep and switch on a Dohm.
Sleep your ass off!
